We have received a statement attributed to the so-called “Union of Southern Syrian Tribes,” representing the Syrian Bedouins, in which they demand that the Iraqi government release a young Syrian man from Homs named Mohammad Suleiman Hassan, who was arrested under anti-terrorism laws in the province of Najaf.
The statement warns that if the Iraqi authorities do not comply with their demand, the Bedouin tribes will close down Shiite religious shrines in Syria and even attack them, particularly the Sayyida Zainab shrine in the Damascus countryside.
It should be noted that this tribal group has previously been involved in sectarian violence against the Druze minority in Sweida. As mentioned in an earlier report, the Syrian state relocated these same tribes from Sweida to the Sayyida Zainab area to carry out a new phase of religious persecution targeting another minority group.
